I began a series of black and white paintings about three years ago, using them as a “warm up” of sorts at the start of the work day. I kept the requirements classic and simple — only black and white paints on whatever medium I chose. So far it has been primarily paper but I have used canvas and illustration board in varying sizes.
Setting limitations on color palette was significant given my love of colour. The exercise, not surprisingly, required me to focus on composition and tonalities. I found I came back to what I always do which is the enjoyment of the tactility and manipulation of the paints themselves. This current series is made up of 14 panels 30″ x 11″ on 100% cotton rag paper.
